Draft Weed Management Strategy

Help Shape our Weed Management Strategy!
Sorell Council has drafted a new Weed Management Strategy to guide how we tackle invasive plants across our community over the next 15 years.
Weeds threaten our natural environment, farming, and community spaces, and this plan sets out a clear path to protect our land, waterways, and biodiversity.
Why is this important?
- More than 370 introduced plants are found in Sorell – 36 are declared weeds under law, and 11 are Weeds of National Significance.
- Weeds damage farming, increase fire risk, threaten native plants and animals, and reduce the value of our natural places.
- Council only manages 2% of land in our community. So weed control is a shared responsibility for landholders, government, and the community.
What the Strategy does
Our Weed Management Strategy sets priorities – weeds are ranked from very high (eradicable or new threats) to low (widespread weeds requiring containment). It provides a 15-year action plan, reviewed every 5 years.
- Focuses on six key objectives:
- Strategic planning – target resources to protect high-value places.
- Partnerships – work with landholders, community groups, and agencies.
- Education and awareness – help everyone identify and manage weeds.
- Best practice management – support training, biological control, and safe herbicide use.
- Risk management – prevent new weeds establishing and respond quickly to new threats.
- Monitoring and review – measure progress and adapt as needed.
What does this mean for our community?
- Council will continue to manage weeds on reserves, roadsides, and public land.
- Landowners and volunteers will play a key role in weed control on private land.
- Education, training, and funding opportunities will help support landholders and groups.
- Stronger coordination across all land tenures will improve results and reduce costs over time.
