Community Nest Box Project
Do you have mature trees, native vegetation or bushland on your property? Or simply an interest in local birds and wildlife? We’d love to hear from you!
Sorell Council is partnering with the University of Tasmania (UTAS) to deliver a pilot research project exploring how community nest boxes can support local bird habitats.
We’re looking for residents in Dodges Ferry, Carlton, Primrose Sands and Connellys Marsh who would like to take part in this hands-on community project.
You don’t need to be a bird expert or have any previous experience. It’s a chance to learn something new, meet other local residents, build a nest box and help provide additional habitat for local birds.
We’re hoping to establish up to 20 nest boxes across these communities.
What does taking part involve?
If you’re decide to take part, you’ll:
- Join a practical nest box building workshop
- Learn more about local birds and their habitat needs
- Build your own nest box
- Get guidance on where and how to place it on your property
- Host the nest box and make occasional observations about what you notice
We’ll provide the materials, guidance and support you need along the way.

A few things you might be wondering.
Not at all! The project is a chance to learn. You’ll be given information and guidance throughout the project.
Nest box workshops are planned for November and December 2026. We’ll be in touch with people who are selected to take part with the workshop dates, times and location. When you register your interest, we’ll also ask about your preferred workshop timing, including weekday daytime, weekday evening or weekends, to help us plan sessions that work for participants.
No. The project will provide the materials and guidance needed to build your nest box.
No. We’re interested in properties with suitable trees, vegetation or other natural features. If you’re unsure, get in touch and we’ll help work out whether your property could be suitable.
Not necessarily. One of the things we’re interested in learning through the pilot is whether, where and how the nest boxes are used. It may take time for birds to find a new box, and some boxes may not be used.
The main commitment is attending the nest box building workshop, hosting the box on your property and making occasional observations. We’ll provide guidance so you know what to expect.
The team will review the responses and get in touch with people who are interested in the project. We’ll provide more information about the workshop and next steps at that stage.
The project commences in September 2026, with practical workshops in November and December. Observations and reports through to April 2027.
