H5 Bird Flu
H5 bird flu (avian influenza) is a contagious, viral disease that mainly affects birds. It has been detected in parts of Tasmania, including one confirmed detection in Dodges Ferry.
The Tasmanian Government is continuing to monitor the situation. There is no need for alarm, but residents are encouraged to take sensible precautions and report sick or dead birds.
Sorell Council is working with other councils across the Greater Hobart area to share information, coordinate our response and plan for any further developments.
What should I do if I see a sick or dead bird?
If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
- Avoid touching or handling the animal.
- Keep pets and children away from the animal.
- Record what you see, including the location and photos or video, if safe to do so.
- Report your sighting through the NRE Tas online reporting form, or call the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888.
Please do not attempt to rescue, move or dispose of sick or dead birds.
How can I help reduce the spread?
- Keep cats indoors or in enclosed areas where possible
- Keep dogs away from sick or dead birds and other wildlife
- Keep pet bird food and water away from wild birds

Bird and poultry owners are encouraged to take extra precautions to protect their birds from H5 bird flu.
