Natural Resource Management Advisory Group (NRMAG) – Expression of Interest

Sorell Council is inviting community members from across the Sorell Municipality to express their interest in joining the Natural Resource Management Advisory Group (NRMAG).

The NRMAG is a voluntary, unpaid community advisory role provides an opportunity for local community members to share their knowledge, experience and perspectives to help support the sustainable management of Sorell’s natural environment.

We invite applications from people who have:

• knowledge or experience of the environmental, social and cultural/heritage values of our region
• a passion for achieving positive environmental and sustainability outcomes
• knowledge and interest in new and emerging issues relating to natural resource management, climate change, biodiversity, invasive species and/or water resources
• a commitment to engaging with, promoting and sharing information with community stakeholders.

About the NRMAG

The NRMAG provides advice to Council on natural resource management matters and supports the implementation of Council’s Natural Resource Management Strategy.

The Group’s objectives are to:

• provide strategic advice to Sorell Council on the implementation of its Natural Resource Management Strategy
• provide local knowledge, expertise and community perspectives to support Council’s natural resource management priorities
• monitor and provide feedback on the implementation of the NRM Strategy and identify opportunities for improvement
• consider emerging natural resource management and environmental issues relevant to the Sorell Municipality
• encourage community engagement and participation in natural resource management
• support communication and information sharing between Council, the community and relevant stakeholders.

The NRMAG is an advisory group and does not make decisions on behalf of Council.

What is involved?

Members are expected to:

• attend regular NRMAG meetings
• actively participate in discussions and contribute their knowledge and perspectives
• provide advice and feedback to Council on relevant NRM matters
• share relevant information and community perspectives
• support positive community engagement around natural resource management
• work respectfully and collaboratively with other Group members.

The NRMAG will meet approximately four times per year.

We are looking for a mix of knowledge, skills, experience and perspectives to help create a balanced and effective Advisory Group.

Staggered terms

Members will be appointed to staggered two-year and three-year terms to provide continuity and stability for the Group.

Applicants can indicate whether they would prefer to be considered for a two-year term, a three-year term, or either.

Please note that while preferences will be considered, final term allocations will be determined as part of the appointment process to establish staggered terms across the Group.

The EOI process will also establish a shortlist of potential applicants who may be considered for future casual vacancies.

What happens next?

Council will assess all Expressions of Interest received and consider the overall balance of knowledge, skills, experience and perspectives across the Group.

Recommendations for membership will be presented to Council in November 2026, following the local government election.
