Welcome to Sorell Council

Mayor's Message...

2008 promises to bring many excitingchanges to our Municipality.

Council recently appointed Bill Costin to the position of General Manager. Mr Costin's enthusiasm and extensive experience in public and private enterprise will help guide Council through some of the challenges facing Sorell over the next few years.

The extensive retail developments at Cambridge will no doubt influence business culture and re-shape the built environment of Sorell in the future. It is hoped residents will welcome the approval by Council for a large supermarket chain to develop on the old Aurora site. At last there will be a choice with the promise of more to come.

Whilst Gordon and Cole Streets are the State Government's responsibility, Council will continue to work with the Department of Infrastructure, Energy and Resources (DIER) to improve traffic flows throughout the township. Plans for a roundabout on the McDonalds corner and the re-opening of Pelham Street should help to relieve some of the congestion.

It is imperative that these works be completed to coincide with the opening of the new supermarket and it's proposed that further works on other surrounding intersections be scheduled accordingly.

Residents in the Southern Beaches are eagerly awaiting the recommendations of the State Government's Water and Sewerage Taskforce. A decision is due in March and in the meantime Council is progressing with its plans to sewer the area with further community consultation on a reticulated water scheme soon to be carried out.

We all sympathise with the local farming community, as the region becomes drier over the summer months. Due to the drought, residents in the Southern Beaches are purchasing excessive quantities of water for domestic use.

The existing Water Board, Hobart Water, and any future water authority should be consulting with our community regarding a reliable and sustainable water supply for domestic and irrigation use. Water for irrigation would see the Sorell area the "bread basket" for the region once again. I intend to further this debate with the farming community and government
representatives in the future.

Throughout the coming year Council will continue to meet its goals for a sustainable future through progressive and responsible budget deliberations.

I would like to wish all Sorell residents a prosperous and fulfilling year!

Mayor Carmel Torenius

In Tasmania's country areas, water is at critically low levels and using water wisely is essential.  While urban Hobart is blessed with good supplies, it's still vital that we save water whenever possible!
