BioBlitz 2026: Southern Tassie Showdown
Tasmania’s southern councils are going toe-to-toe in a regional BioBlitz to see who can record the most plant, animal and fungi species in two weeks.
Residents of Sorell, Hobart, Clarence, Kingborough, Glenorchy, Huon Valley and the Tasman Peninsula are being challenged to join the Southern Tassie Bioblitz Showdown and log as many plant, animal and fungi species as they can using the iNaturalist citizen science platform.
Residents have just two weeks to log everything from insects to birds, orchids, grasses, mammals, reptiles and even weeds on iNaturalist, a free mobile app that lets you record, share and identify plants, animals and fungi.
The event runs from 15th September to 30th September 2026.
How to get involved
The BioBlitz uses iNaturalist, a free citizen science app that allows you to photograph, record and identify plants, animals and fungi.
Get set up before the BioBlitz begins:
- Download the free iNaturalist app from the App Store or Google Play if you don’t already have it.
- Create an iNaturalist account – if you already have an account, you’re ready to go.
- Search for the Sorell BioBlitz 2026 project within the app.
- Click ‘Join’ to become part of the Sorell BioBlitz.
- From 15 September, start exploring and recording what you find!
When you spot something, simply take a photo using the iNaturalist app and upload your observation. iNaturalist can help identify what you’ve found, and your observations will contribute to the BioBlitz.
What should I look for? Keep an eye out for:
- Birds
- Insects and other creepy crawlies
- Native plants and grasses
- Orchids and other flowers
- Reptiles
- Mammals
- Fungi
- Weeds
You don’t need to be a biodiversity expert to take part. The BioBlitz is a great opportunity for people of all ages and experience levels to spend some time outdoors, discover what lives around them and contribute to our understanding of local biodiversity.
We’re particularly interested in finding out what’s living in Sorell’s gardens, bushland, parks, reserves and coastal areas – you might be surprised by what you discover!
