Wheelie Bins
Wheelie bins make putting your garbage and recycling out a lot easier. They are light and easy to wheel to the roadside.
Many other councils in Tasmania are using the wheelie bins and have proved most successful, overcoming occupational health and safety issues with garbage collectors as well as problems of dogs getting into garbage bags.
The wheelie bins are the property of Sorell Council and must remain with the property if you move house.
The wheelie bin must be positioned in the right place on collection day as only one person, who also drives the truck, will collect it.
The wheelie bins are emptied using a mechanical arm.
Recycling wheelie bins are to be positioned one (1) metre away from the general waste wheelie bin.
Use the Waste Bins Application Form to apply for:
- A Recycling Wheelie Bin
- A Wheelie Bin (Mobile Garbage Bin)
- Wheelie Bin Size Upgrade or Downgrade ( from or to 80 or 140 Litres Size)
How to position your wheelie bins
If your wheelie bin and recycling crate are not in the right place or if the bin is over full or too heavy your garbage cannot be collected.
Only bins with the Sorell Council logo will be collected and no extra bags or boxes with household rubbish will be collected.
Place the bin on clear ground at the road verge next to your driveway, away from overhanging branches.
The Council logo must be facing the road and the wheels closest to your property.
Place your recycling bin at least one metre away from the wheelie bin.
Ensure the bin's lid is fully closed.
Return the bins to your property as soon as possible after collection to avoid wind damage and theft.
Residents with long or very steep driveways may wish to secure the wheelie bin and recycling bin close to the road for storage.
Do not place your wheelie bin
Under or next to a tree, power pole, street sign or other obstruction;
Within one metre of or behind another wheelie bin or recycling bin;
Behind a parked car;
On uneven ground;
Do not overfill the bin, place anything on top of the bin, or lean objects against it.
What you can place in your wheelie bin
Only normal household waste should be bagged or wrapped and placed in you wheelie bin.
