What's New | Welcome to Sorell CouncilMayor's Message...I wish to acknowledge the work undertaken by the Senior Management Team and the time given by Councillors, to bring the 2008/2009 Sorell Corporate Plan to the Community. I also take the opportunity to welcome Bill Costin, the new General Manager. Over the past few years Council has taken a pro-active role and made some hard decisions to ensure the sustainability of the Council. Due to responsible decisions and a strategic vision, Council's financial position has greatly improved. Whilst the Council remains one of the fastest growing in the State, the upgrading of infrastructure, cost shifting by State and Federal Governments and understandably increased expectations by residents has impacted dramatically on our finances. Of late, the increased housing developments within the Sorell Township and the Coles Myer construction now underway have boosted morale with promise of further commercial activity. Plans to improve traffic flows throughout the town will be a priority. There are changing but exciting times ahead for Sorell as we celebrate 200 years of settlement in 2009. We have had a colourful past and the future is looking bright. There is no doubt that the transition of Water and Sewerage from Council to the Regional Water Authority will improve Council's financial position in the coming years. We will continue to address strategies outlined in the Strategic Community Plan 2008/2013 and a Sorell Town Master Plan will link into a proposed Settlement Plan, replacing the 1993 Sorell Planning Scheme. I believe there is a future in resource sharing with our neighbouring Councils to achieve improved financial outcomes and an acceptable level of service delivery for residents in the SouthEast Region. Sorell Council is sustainable. We have a vision but we must remain focused on financial outcomes. Mayor Carmel Torenius
