Welcome to Sorell Council

Mayor's Message...

Sorell is celebrating 200 years of settlement with many events organised over the coming weeks providing community members with an opportunity to show pride of place.

As the third oldest town in Tasmania since European settlement, Sorell played a critical role as the "granary of NSW" when the area provided most of the grain for the fledgling colony 200 years ago.

Very few towns in Australia can look back on 200 years of settlement and Sorell has many secrets and stories to tell.

As we celebrate our past we reflect on a bygone era of those who forged a life for their families as we are doing today.

In 2009 residents of the Sorell district are again "ploughing new ground".

The town is bustling and reflects the confidence of the commercial and residential sectors in the area, remaining one of the fastest growing municipalities in the state.

Sorell is changing and it is important to preserve what is left of the historic built environment of the district.

Several events will be held over  the coming weeks to celebrate our 200 years of settlement, and we would invite everyone to come along and help us commemorate this important time in our history.

The town has a colourful past and a promising future.

Together we can make 2009 in Sorell a year to remember.

Become Waterwise !!

Sorell Council along with other Council's is becoming Waterwise.
Australia is currently experiencing a long, difficult drought, placing pressure on one of the country's most precious   resources - water.

In Tasmania's country areas, water is at critically low levels and using water wisely is essential.  While urban Hobart is blessed with good supplies, it's still vital that we save water whenever possible!
Click the Waterwise logo and follow the links for tips on how you can save water.

Quick Tips:

  • Take shorter showers and install a water efficient shower head - a shower uses 10-20 litres of water every minute
  • Consider investing in a front loading washing machine - it may cost more initially but will use less water and detergent. Wash with cold water
  • Install a dripper system and a tap timer and check hoses and taps for leaks
  • Choose a drought-resistant lawn or look into alternatives like paving or astro-turf
  • Consider installing a rain water tank  - for people currently using mains water
