Local Government Board Review of Voluntary Amalgamation and Shared Services for Sorell and Tasman Councils – Submissions OPEN

Public submissions are now invited on a Local Government Board Review of voluntary amalgamation and shared services options for Sorell and Tasman Councils.

Local Government Board Chair, Mr Greg Preece, said the Board’s Review had been initiated by the Minister for Planning and Local Government at the request of the two Councils.

The Board’s public consultation phase commences on Saturday 24 February 2018 and ends on Friday 6 April 2018.

“It is important that anyone who may be affected takes this opportunity to have their say.”

The Board’s due diligence review will be guided by four key principles, that any option is:

  • In the interests of ratepayers
  • Improves the level of service for communities
  • Preserves and maintains local representation and
  • Ensures that the financial status of the entities is strengthened.

“We are inviting anyone who may have an interest in the matter – residents, ratepayers, visitors, and businesses within the area as well as people in the surrounding area who may be affected to provide their views.”

Mr Preece said consultation will be a key component of the Review and the Consultation Paper will assist persons interested in making a submission.

The Board is providing opportunities for both written and verbal submissions to be made to it by the public and affected Councils.  The Board will consider all submissions to inform the Review. The Board’s preferred form is written submissions. However, verbal submissions will be heard at public hearings by appointment.

Written submissions

Written submissions close at 5pm on  Friday 6 April 2018 and can be delivered to the Board either by email to: lgboard@dpac.tas.gov.au or by mail to:

In writing a submission, you are asked to provide your name, address, telephone number and other contact details.

Verbal submissions

The Board will hold three public hearings to provide an opportunity for those interested in making a verbal submission. If you wish to make a verbal submission at one of the hearings then you must make an appointment to do so. Appointment bookings must be made before 5pm on Monday 19 March 2018.

A verbal submission may take the place of a written submission or a person may speak to a written submission.

The times, dates and venues for the public hearings are as follows:

  • Hobart – at RACV/RACT Apartment Hotel on Monday 26 March 2018 from 3pm.
  • Tasman – at Tasman Council Chambers on Tuesday 27 March 2018 from 3pm.
  • Sorell – at Sorell Council Offices on Wednesday 28 March 2018 from 3pm.
